Kindred Ash is an installation by Gwen Stevenson that reflects on kinship, loss, and renewal within the changing landscapes of the island of Ireland. Taking inspiration from the decline of ash trees, the work considers both ecological fragility and the cultural memory rooted in this place.
Through a shifting interplay of image, sound, and material, Kindred Ash evokes traces of what has been lost while opening space for new forms of connection to emerge. Fragments of landscape, voice, and texture appear and recede, creating an atmosphere that moves between presence and absence.
At its core, the work draws on the idea of unseen connections, echoing the underground networks that sustain forest life, as a way of thinking about interdependence beyond the human. Rather than offering a fixed narrative, Kindred Ash invites a slower mode of attention, where grief, care, and possibility coexist.
The installation unfolds as a temporary environment, shaped by time, perception, and encounter.
Kindred Ash will be open during Late Night Art on Thursday 1st October, 6-8pm.
This event forms part of our ongoing showcase opportunities for members.
