Reading Water Workshop
Reading Water is a workshop event that forms part of What can you see, from over the brow? an installation by Aiden Brady at Digital Arts Studios in partnership with the Belfast Photo Festival 2025.
Friday 13th June, 1-4pm.
This workshop will consist of a presentation of art practices which connect to ecological issues, followed by a discussion of how these art practices could be used by communities to encourage learning, understanding, and change. This workshop hopes to bring together creative practitioners & technologists and practical-minded environmental activists to contemplate how their working interests might overlap. Beyond that, it aims to finish the session with clear ideas and prospects for collaboration on projects which might directly assist affected NI communities who are opposing climate breakdown.
This workshop will take place at the Digital Arts Studios on Friday 13th June, 1 - 4pm. See booking details below.
Hosted by Aiden Brady, it includes presentations by Ami Clarke and Rodrigo Romero Flores, where they will share how their art practices connect to ecological matters. In the first part of the session, there will be some discussion of these art practices in the context of environmental concerns.
DAS has been working in partnership with artist Ami Clarke in relation to her project ‘Meeting the Lough on its own terms’ that brings a new microbial perspective to the algae bloom outbreak at Lough Neagh. Her presentation forms part of an ongoing series of events, talks and workshops with DAS XR Lab and PS2 that consider ways of ‘sensing’ the lough from a multi-species perspective.
Rodrigo Romero-Flores is a chilean experimental sound composer, visual artist and writer, based in Northern Ireland. He is a member of the DAS XR Lab and a recent artist-in-residence. His current research focuses on visual and sonic experimentation through the associations between war discourse and the emotional consequences of loneliness and the feeling of loss in an alienated world.
In the second part, we will be demonstrating and sharing a look at the Knowflow Gravity Sensor, for use with Arduino. This sensor kit is designed for detecting pH and Conductivity levels in water and after the session it will be available for free hire from DAS, who will manage the hire process. The aim of this session is to tie ecological and technological art practice to the possibility of direct actions which might empower communities to take some ownership over Northern Irish waterways.
The session runs from 1pm - 4pm at Digital Art Studios, 1 Exchange Place, Belfast, we would be delighted to see you there.
