During this class we explore the hybrid quality of information and representation. We start with a visual image and explore ways of converting it into audio. All sounds came as direct recordings from the islanders, and the VR drawing was a direct response to graphic scores created on paper by natural materials and translated into data using Gravity Sketch and Unity. Bio Ann Burns is a visual artist from North Cork, (Ireland). Her practice engages participants in pedagogical processes that lead to ambitious digital and physical sculptural forms. Trained in ceramics and photography and having an understanding of the value of material forms, Ann has been investigating the sensory materiality of both virtual and augmented realities. Bio Thomas has been exploring spirituality and creating digital content for over 15 years. He cut his teeth performing live visuals to over 100,000 people with Top Djs around the world. Incorporating years spent studying the history of colour and music and algorithms to produce shows which could be animated by audio frequencies and manually manipulated to create improvised live art. This led to large-scale projection shows at the opening of Edbrington and The Land of Giants in Belfast, awarded 5 stars by The Huffington Post. Thomas has also shown work at The Metropolitan Museum in NYC, SXSW in Austin, and The LPM in Rome. Through a fusion of augmented reality and artificial intelligence, it resurrects the voice of a turn-of-the-century linen mill worker, delving into issues of child exploitation by mill proprietors then, paralleling the exploitation by today’s social media conglomerates. It also underscores how social divisions continue to be exploited for the enrichment of a privileged few. Bio Robert Peters is an artist facilitator based in Bangor, Northern Ireland. A founding director of Catalyst Arts, he has worked in a range of cultural management roles alongside maintaining his artistic practice. His artwork is represented within the collections of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, Trinity College, Dublin and the Hong Kong Open Print Studio. In the 1950s a dark fairy story called 'Áine, Cnóc Áine' was sourced from Pádraig Mac Seáin, a fisherman in Teelin at that time. The exhibition will continue at DAS until the 18th of August. Opening hours: 12 – 5pm, Tue – Fri. Allison Maria Rodriguez was the guest international artist in residence at DAS for May-June 2023. Throughout the residency, Rodriguez filmed extensively across Northern Ireland creating footage of many ancient and sacred spaces including Nendrum Monastic Site, Ossian's Grave and Beaghmore Stone Circles. This stunning footage of the Northern Irish landscape forms the basis of a new project, now in development. As part of skipper Paddy's trip he stops at sea stacks under Cnóc Áine. In the 1950s a dark fairy story called 'Áine, Cnóc Áine' was sourced from Pádraig Mac Seáin, a fisherman in Teelin at that time.
