Shelby Woods & Lisa Byrne: Artists’ Talks

August 10th, 2011

The DAS residency programme allows artists from a wide range of disciplines to work on digital projects in a dedicated environment. An important part of the programme is the opportunity to showcase work to an audience and informally discuss their practice with both peers and public. Our current Uk & Ireland Residents will be giving talks on their work in August and September. DAS is pleased to present the first of these talks by artists Shelby Woods and Lisa Byrne.

Date: Tuesday 30th August // Time: 6pm // Location: Digital Arts Studios

Lisa Byrne

Róisín (image courtesy of Lisa Byrne: video still, 2011)

Lisa Byrne has exhibited in group and solo shows internationally since 1995, highlights include the Guggenheim museums worldwide, and in the Courtauld Institute of Art. Lisa graduated with an MA from the RCA in 2007. ACNI hold her work in their collection. Lisa mainly uses photography and video. Her work centres on human experience, taking an intimate path into the lives of those with whom she has a personal relationship. The trust and commitment engendered from this artist-subject relationship is pronounced in the depth of the work. The work itself is intimate and personal employing an immersive relationship with the audience.  This communication between the victims of the Troubles with the spectator is perhaps the most important feature of the work. Although the communication is generated from the victim whilst the audience is the receiver of information, it remains a dynamic interaction connecting on an intimate psychological and emotional level.

See Lisa Byrne’s new work at Golden Thread Gallery as part of the group exhibition ’Other Stories‘.

Date: Thursday 25th August // Time: 6pm // Location: Golden Thread Gallery

Shelby Woods

The ocean that isn’t (image courtesy of Shelby Woods: installation of flour, lipgloss, and amplifier with sound,  2011)

Shelby Woods is from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She currently holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in painting and sculpture from the University of Oklahoma and studied abroad at the University of Hertfordshire, greater London, in 2007. She is currently pursuing her Master of Fine Art degree at the University of Ulster, Belfast. Her work deals with the idea of ‘neither here nor there’ and the concept of a wide and borderless space is the region in which she practices. Liminality and nothingness are central to her investigations. Far from the capitals, publishing houses and artistic hubs of the world, these geographic and cultural blank spaces are centres of production where the world is anything but still. Blankness and invisibility permeate her work. The infinite––or the suggestion of infinity—is representative of the world that lies in between what most people know.

All DAS talks are free and open to the public.

Upcoming Digital Opportunities

April 7th, 2011

Call for Applications: Pixilerations [v.8]: New Media Fringe Festival – 22 Sep to 2 Oct, 2011.

PIXILERATIONS gathers and showcases cutting-edge new-media artworks through an annual festival in Providence, Rhode Island (USA). This unique forum investigates the rapidly-developing field of new media arts through installations, performances and film/video screenings. It forms part of the larger FirstWorks Festival (www.first-works.org), a multi dimensional performing arts festival that celebrates cultural “firsts” as avenues for strengthening community and creativity.

In an era of Facebook/Twitter-inflamed revolutions, biotechnology ethics wars, and youtube-generated museum exhibitions, this year’s festival seeks to examine the question “Where – and what – is New Media Art today?” New Media art traditionally held a role at the intersections of art, science, technology, and social realms, yet artists who do not identify as New Media artists now make free use of the same tools as video game programmers, robotics engineers, and DJs. Pixilerations [v.8] seeks work that broadly explores these identity questions of art/not art, new/old. We invite artists, musicians, performers, film/video makers, and new media practitioners to submit their work for Pixilerations [v.8] to the following website: http://pixilerations.org/2011/submission.html.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS EXTENDED TO APRIL 19, 2011. Questions about the submission process and Pixilerations should be directed to pixilerations@first-works.org
